Preliminary Task Practice

This is a screen grab to show a whole class exercise we did on learning to use Final Cut Pro. I found it very interesting and for something that looks very complex I managed to get the hang of it quite quickly and can't wait to use it for my preliminary task and the video that I am going to create.

We then moved onto Soundtrack Pro to add music to the video. Again, it looks very complex but is easy once you know what you're doing. I have found that this has helped me a lot to get to grips with the new two programs, so that I can use it to do my preliminary task and video.

Research 10 - Romeo and Juliet

I couldn't find the video on YouTube so here is the link for it on art of the title:

The music in this video is very dramatic and engages you instantly.

I like how the film starts with a prologue to entice the audience and how the camera zooms into the narrator. This really sets the scene and makes a dramatic opening.

I like how the surroundings are blurred and more focused down the end of the shot. I also like how the camera zooms down the road. This fast paced and blurred shot shows a time frame to emphasise to the audience that this battle has been for a long time.

These titles are constantly flashing up in between the clips of the town, which creates a dramatic and fast beat opening to draw the audiences attention.

I like how the camera zooms in on the statue. The fact that it is a statue of Jesus creates the impression that there is a religious theme throughout the movie and contrasts well with the war theme between the two families.

This establishing camera shot shows you the Capulet and Montague conflict really well as the buildings are right next to each other in constant battle with which one will be the best.

This shot shows the flames about to come up inbetween a few shots to highlight the fury and anger between the two familys shown on the newspaper article above and to act as a transition from one scene to another smoothly.

This close up camera shot highlights the anger in his face. I also like how the characters names are given and their status' by the actors faces, this is an interesting way to introduce the characters to the audience and to let them know exactly who they are. I might use this kind of introduction in my video.

This is the same as above, but in this screen shot we can see that Romeo's father is very powerful, as he is in the back of a car, maybe being driven somewhere. He also has a very dark background behind him to make it all seem very mysterious.

Research 9 - The Fall

The music is slow and unexpected as it begins as the man's face is out of the water and just before the title is shown, which creates an eerie atmosphere. Also, the black and white colouring creates an old feel to the video.

I also like how the movie opening is shown in a slow motion effect so that we can see all the characters emotions and expressions and to build up the tension of the opening.

I like how the guy emerges out the water in this close up camera shot, as it is shown the lighting is also quite dark and gloomy looking.

I chose this screen grab because I like how the water sprays onto the camera, making us feel as if we are there.

In this camera shot the only item is the feather, which draws your attention directly to it. This makes us wonder what the feathers importance is and adds a sense of mystery to the opening.

I like how the man appears through the smoke cloud as if he is forcing his way through, creating an eerie kind of feeling to the audience with the slow motion helping to portray this atmosphere.

This low camera angle shows us the size of the train compared to how small the people are, highlighting the vulnerability of the people. It also shows you a characters point of view looking up at the train.

This close up camera shot shows the emotion on the actors face and the slow motion effect really helps express his determination and the tension filled atmosphere.

Research 8 - Spiderman 3

The music creates a dramatic and thrilling atmosphere to the opening and keeps the audience interested.

I like this screen grab as the titles almost fly off the screen as if they have been sliced by the web runs through them.

This screen grab zooms in and out of the web, giving you a different perspective each time. By having close up shots it lets the audience know that it's a spider web. The lighting in these shots is reflected off the web so that our attention is drawn to the titles.

The titles here are bold and stand out with the light shining through them. By having this lighting we can easily see the web behind that the previous shots may have been of.

I chose this screen grab as it shows you the actors through shattered glass and is a creative way to introduce the characters to the audience.

This shot shows how the glass changes from clear to the shattered glass effect as a transition from one shot to another.

I love how the spiders in this screen grab scurry across the camera screen, while the background changes, again this is an engaging transition which relates to the title "Spiderman 3".

This again shows the shattered glass effect through an establishing shot. But in this shot the glass changes into a clear picture of the city, before the movie begins. I might use this kind of effect in my video as it sets the scene well.

Research 7 - True Blood

The music fits perfectly with the supernatural/drama genre. It is fast, dramatic and has a rocky and quirky sound to it with the electric guitar and singing.

I like how the camera shows two perspectives on the lake one from the underneath of the lake and then another as the camera moves upwards to show you the view from the surface of the water. I also like how the titles almost blend in with the background.

I picked this screen grab because I light how the light shines through the shoots in the lake. In this shot we have the same camera angle as above, as if you're in the water looking around you.

This is a low camera angle that may be showing a child's point of view and portraying a vulnerable side to the character looking up. Again the titles in this scene blend in with the background so that they don't draw our attention instantly.

I chose this shot as I love how the snake is caught in action and it is shown in slow motion, so that we can get the feel for the power of the snake. Although I probably won't be able to do this in my video I still think it is a very powerful and exciting shot to have in a movie opening.

I like this screen grab as the extreme close up camera angle shows the actors expression really well. Also, you could have lots of different thoughts on what the juice on his face is there for. But I think it is meant to remind you of blood, which links in with the vampire theme in the movie and the title "True Blood".

The close up camera shot of the two woman praying immediately tells us that something is concerning them. Also, they both have some sort of tags attactched to them, showing that they are in the same situation together.

I love how this close up camera shot of the fox has been fastforward to show it decomposing quicktime. I might use a fastforward or rewind in time in my video to show a time frame.

The bright and bold red lips immediately grab your attention in this extreme close. Unusually the smoke comes into her mouth and dissappears as if the shot has been rewinded, this scene creates an eerie mysterious kind of setting to the opening.

This last screen grab creates an eye-catching title, with the bright red background. I also like how the words are almost embedded into the bubbles behind them. The red bubbled effect in the background may have been used to represent blood.

Research 6 - Tomorrow Never Dies

I like the shattered glass effect which is used as a transition to the next scene, as it adds excitment and entices you into the video.

This is a clever way to introduce one of the characters as the body lifts up out of the floor as if it is coming alive and is covered in computer graphics, creating a robotic feel to the character.

This medium shot highlights that the robotic looking figure is actually a women, this is done almost as if it is an infrared image of her face. The titles used in this opening our simple and fit perfectly with the action/adventure genre of the film.

This unusual effect used makes the see through gun feel like 3D, as if the bullet is being fired towards you. The red burst around the gun also add to the dramatic feel as you can almost feel the bullet being shot out the gun. This helps keep you on the edge of your seat and adds an adventurous feel to the movie.

I might use this kind of effect of the bullet rippling through the water, as it looks effective and creates a smooth and interseting transition from one scene to another.

This shattered glass effect is something that I would love to use in my video, as it draws the audiences attention because it is interesting and exciting to watch.

This screen grab shows the dancers coming out from the tiny bullet capsules, creating an interesting scene and relating back to the gun being fired previously. I also like how the camera is fuzzy closer to the lens than it is in the distance to make sure our attention is on the two women in the distance. I might try and use this effect in my video.

I love how this close up camera shot mixes the black and white in with the colour shots. Also how the black and white part shows her human side and the colour shots show a modern computerized side to her.

The music begins very dramatic and adventurous, but after the movie title is shown it changes into a more relaxed tone of music with a soft women's voice singing, which adds to the romantic side of the film.
